How to write an Instagram bio people actually understand
A practical checklist and before-and-after examples for a clearer creator or small-business bio.
A good bio answers three questions in seconds: who is this for, what will I get, and what should I do next? Avoid vague claims like “dreamer, entrepreneur, visionary.” Specific beats impressive.
The three-line formula
- Who you help: “Helping first-time runners train for their first 5K.”
- What you share: “Simple weekly plans, injury-prevention basics and motivation.”
- One next step: “Start with the free beginner checklist below.”
Before and after
Before: “Passionate about marketing. Living my best life. DM for collabs.”
After: “Helping independent cafés turn regulars into loyal fans ☕ | Local marketing ideas, menus and content | See this week's café tip ↓”
Only use credentials, claims or results you can support. Read your bio out loud: if it sounds like a corporate press release, simplify it.
Bio checklist
- Lead with a recognisable audience or topic.
- Use one clear value proposition, not five.
- Make the next action obvious.
- Match your bio to the posts people will actually see.
